Itinerary of Long Tan and Nui Dat Battlefields
Tourguide and driver will pick you up at Phu My Cruise Ship Port, start your Vung Tau shore excursion with a visit to Long Tan and Nui Dat Old Battlefields. Your first stop of the day is the former Nui Dat Task Force Base where two pillars of main gain are the only remains. The former runway has given way to a wide stretch of village road while the old helipad is now a football field.
Then you’ll visit Nui Dat Kindergarten. Opened in October 2010 and funded by the Australian Vietnam Volunteers Resource Group, this kindergarten now stands on the site where over 5000 Australian soldiers were based at any one time during the Vietnam War.
Afterward, while en route to the Discourtesy Rubber Plantation, you’ll be driven past the location of the Horseshoe, of which access is prohibited due to mining activity. After lunch, continue to the Long Tan Cross Memorial, the Long Phuoc Tunnels and Minh Dam moutain, which is no longer the “Secret Zone”.
Leaving Nui Dat, we’ll head to the beach city of Vung Tau where we will enjoy a delicious lunch with a sea view. And we’ll visit the must-see spots of Vung Tau, including a climb to the top of the Jesus Christ Statue where we can view the whole city and the East Sea.
Then we discover the Vung Tau”s nicest colonial era mansion - the last King Bao Dai’s White Palace (Bach Dinh). It was built as a retreat for French Governor of Indochina Paul Doumer at the beginning of the 20th century.
Return to Phu My Port Vung Tau in good time. Trip ends when the driver drops you off at the port for your cruise departure.
Attractions to visit in this shore excursion trip
Nui Dat Battlefield
Nui Dat (small hill) was an ideal location for the new Australian Task Force base. It was on a main highway, Route 2, approximately 30 kilometres from the port of Vung Tau which was the new Australian logistic support base.
Nui Dat Task Force Base (Nui Dat SS Hill). Little remains of this camp except the columns of the main gate. The former runway is now a wide street in the local village and the old heli-pad is now a soccer field. A school established by the Australians is nearby.
The Long Tan Cross
You will have the opportunity to pay your respects and reflect on the sacrifices of Australian and Vietnamese soldiers who had extraordinary courage during the fierce Battle of Long Tan.
The original Cross was subsequently found and is now is displayed in the Dong Nai Museum. The base in which it sits hides the damage which occurred when the Cross was removed from its initial site on the Long Tan battlefield.
Long Phuoc Tunnel
The Long Phuoc Tunnel Relic is located in Long Phuoc Commune, about 7 km from the center of Ba Ria City to the northeast. This is a heroic testimony of Vietnam people and army during the two resistance wars against the French colonialists and the American imperialists. In addition, Long Phuoc Tunnel is also a unique creation of the people”s war led by the Communist Party of Vietnam.
Throughout the years of fierce wars, an unique and famous tunnel system was created here under the leadership of communist Party.
Minh Dam Mountain
The mountain is bordered on three sides by the sea and has many natural caves and fresh spring water. The mountain served as the military base for the liberation troop against the French and the Americans.
During the two wars, Minh Dam suffered from intense bombing. In fact, bullet holes still remain on the mountain.
The pay off at the top is worth it and it is great for stunning views. There are other hikes and caves to explore in the area, just watch out for monkeys.
Giant Zesus Statue
Jesus Christ Statue stand atop Small mountain (generally representing Vung Tau in most travel guides), this statue overlooks the city from a clear vantage point, it is especially beautiful at sunrise. It’s not an easy hike to the top, there are exactly 847 steps to conquer, but in the end, you will be rewarded with sweeping views of the coast.
Originally started in 1972, but the construction was only completed in 1993. The adventurous travelers are welcome to climb up to the top of inside Christ arms and enjoy the breathtaking panoramic view of Vung Tau city.
White Palace (Bach Dinh)
Bach Dinh, or the White Palace of Vung Tau City is located at 4 Tran Phu Street, on the slop of Big Mountain. Standing 50 meter above the sea level, White Palace has its French name which is La Villa Blanche. Once visiting the White Palace, you will be attracted by its all white appearance, which is the reason why people here call it “Bach Dinh” (“Bach” means white color in Vietnamese).
Since it was designed and constructed by French, this three-floor building was strongly influenced by French and a little bit Greek style with the height of 19 meters and length of 25 meters.
